Welcome to the
fanlistings.org approved fanlisting for Straight Edge.
What is Straight Edge?
Straight Edge is a commitment to abstain
from alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs and often promiscuous
sex. It is closely associated with the hardcore punk scene and involves
a conscious choice to label yourself 'Straight Edge' and understand
and join the counter culture that surrounds it.
Why become Straight Edge?
The reasons for becoming Straight Edge are
many and vary from person to person. For some it is due to the physical
and mental benefits being free from chemical stimulants brings,
for other's it is a reaction against the mainstream alcohol and
drugs culture.
Straight Edge?
The term Straight Edge is attributed to Ian
MacKaye of the influential hardcore punk bank Minor Threat. This
fanlisting is named after another of Minor Threat's songs, Out of
Step (With the World).
The X?
Again inspired by Ian MacKaye and the punk
scene, the X arose from the Mabuhay Gardens club in San Francisco
marking MacKaye's first band the Teen Idles with an X on the back
of their hands during a gig they played their while under the legal
drinking age. It spread from San Francisco and was adopted by those
over drinking age but who chose not to drink.
The X itself is still widely seen in Straight
Edge circles, often represented as XXX instead of the single X.
The three Xs can be seen to represent MacKaye's "don't smoke,
don't drink, don't fuck" outlook or as representative of
mind, body and soul. Straight Edge can also be represented as sXe
or hXc (a play on hardcore)
